Green Deal for Central Asian Universities

The Green Deal for Central Asian Universities (GDCAU) is an international initiative co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. It brings together 13 public and private universities from Germany, Slovakia, Austria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to highlight the role of higher education in achieving sustainable development. The project motivates and equips Central Asian universities to act as change agents, aligning their missions, strategies, and curricula with the principles of the European Green Deal.

Through a broad yet coordinated approach, GDCAU focuses on transforming university governance, educational programmes, research capacity, and stakeholder engagement. The initiative emphasises an inclusive transition to a green economy by integrating sustainability and regenerative development into institutional structures and partnerships across the region.

Structure and Implementation

GDCAU is structured into five Working Packages (WPs), each led or co-led by different university partners, ensuring shared ownership and regional relevance. This modular framework allows the project to pursue strategic goals across governance, education, business collaboration, and outreach.

  • WP1 – Management ensures efficient coordination and quality control throughout the project.

  • WP2 – Green Deal Centres (GDCs) establish a network of physical and digital hubs for sustainability-focused activity. Each partner university is expected to host a flexible GDC space, and a corresponding webpage integrated with the central GDCAU.eu portal.

  • WP3 – Educational Activities centre on curriculum reform and capacity building. Partner universities will introduce new sustainability-focused courses and revise the existing ones.

  • WP4 – Business Cooperation strengthens collaboration between academia and industry.

  • WP5 – Dissemination and Visibility provides broad communication of the project’s outcomes through events, publications, and social media engagement.

Green Deal Centre Hub Webpage

As part of the GDCAU initiative, each partner university, including the University of Central Asia (UCA), is expected to establish a dedicated Green Deal Centre (GDC) Hub webpage hosted on its institutional website. The UCA GDC Hub will be integrated into the main University of Central Asia website, providing visibility to both internal and external audiences. It will feature contributions and updates from UCA staff, students, and researchers involved in GDCAU activities, highlighting UCA’s commitment to sustainability and regional cooperation.

All institutional GDC Hubs will be linked to the central GDCAU website (www.gdcau.eu), which serves as the project’s main online platform. This central portal will host a wide range of resources including research publications, educational materials, updates on all work packages, and documentation of outcomes across the partner network.

The required structure for each GDC Hub webpage includes:

  • about the GDC and its role at the university;

  • news and events (linked or synchronised with GDCAU news);

  • list of local partners (businesses, NGOs, government agencies);

  • student organisations involved in sustainability and environmental action;

  • educational resources, such as syllabi, teaching materials, and student projects (in cooperation with WP3);

  • research projects addressing environmental and sustainability challenges;

  • publications, well-organised using categories and hashtags to enhance accessibility and impact.

Through these digital hubs, UCA and other partners will ensure transparency, increase public awareness, and strengthen collaboration on sustainability efforts across Central Asia and beyond.
